Laser and Optical Electronics Engineering Department at the University of Technology awarded MA degree to student Hamsa Amer Abdel Majid for her thesis tagged (a nanocomposite layer of silver nanoparticles / reduced graphene oxide for the optical detector).

X-ray examinations revealed the hexagonal structure of graphene oxide nanoparticles and the face-centered structure of silver. Infrared spectroscopy confirms the reduction of graphene oxide using green tea leaves, while the atomic force microscopy images indicate the nanostructure of the materials used. The UV-visible spectrometer indicates the absorbance of graphene oxide at the wavelength ~280 nm, while the reduced oxide is at the wavelength ~295 nm, and this indicates the success of graphene oxide reduction. The nanocomposites were prepared in three ratios by two methods, namely, the fast spin coating method and the forward bias laser induced method. The structural properties of the films prepared in two ways refer to the structure of the face-centered type (FCC), and this is attributed to the nanoparticles present in the crystal structure. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images indicate the transformation of alfalfa nanoparticles in the structure of reduced graphene oxide nanoparticles. Optical properties using aluminum electrodes deposited on glass and then applying the forward bias induced laser method in order to study the optical application (photosensor), current-voltage properties curve referring to a Schottky type optical sensor with good physical properties that increase with the increase in the proportions of silver nanoparticles. The responsiveness, detection, and quantitative efficiency were also observed to increase with increasing proportions of silver nanoparticles.
